History

The Bayview Cemetery’s official history dates back more than 100 years to 1902, but Berkeley, New Jersey, inhabitants have been interring loved ones in these hallowed grounds, directly behind Dover Chapel and the old school house on Route 9 (called Routes 4 and 9 at the time), since before the American Revolution in 1776. In fact, several of the old Dover Chapel Cemetery’s headstones date back to the 17th century.

It wasn’t until December 21, 1931 that the Bayville Cemetery Improvement Association was formed to ensure the cemetery’s perpetual care. The names of the original trustees were: Mr. Jesse Grant, Mrs. E.R. Van Wickle, Mrs. Florence M. Newman, Mrs. Mary E. Havens, Mr. Devine Butler, and Mr. Jesse P. Evernham. Mr. Marcus C. Butler was named president, Mrs. Estelle Wardell served as treasurer, and Mr. Leslie Cornelius as caretaker.

In November 26, 1968, the Bayview Cemetery acquired an additional 0.85-acre parcel of land, extending the cemetery’s northern edge to Butler Avenue. The old Dover Chapel Cemetery lay to the east. In 1976, the cemetery was expanded again and these new plots, along with the existing Bayview Cemetery, would now be known as the Bayville Cemetery and would be governed by the Bayville Cemetery Improvement Association. This nonprofit organization still governs the cemetery today.
